I am interested in making aesthetically seductive work that is able to incite a sociopolitical or philosophical conversation. I see my work as a visual meditation, a continued attempt for potent visual condensation of thought. My art practice is focused on creating conceptually rooted work using a variety of mediums, including, but not limited to video installation, installation, oil paint, stop-motion animation, and live cinema performance (VJing).
Surprise and revelation never lose their power to imprint, and hopefully to provoke action and reflection.

The Butter's All Gone Michelle Mayer May 18 - June 30 2006

Can we sustain ourselves on security? Can we nurture in the presence of force? Where are the real consequences of our actions to be seen, and how can we begin to find where "real" has gone?

In this latest body of work I have chosen representation through painting for the agreement it immediately implies and for the conceptual space conjured by the apparent familiarity of what we see. A tractor-trailer falls from the sky and bullets are served as breakfast cereal. We understand these objects, but find them displaced between the lines that draw our current experience.

Having grown accustomed to the constant barrage of customized "facts," we've slowly begun to agree, gradually losing track of our complicity in what takes place around us. Inhumanity finds its way into the home, and boundaries of self are subtly eroded. I believe this course must be re-examined vigilantly and constantly by every citizen.

Art-making is my action for positive change in the
World, and I have chosen to use satire and visual irony much like the early 20th century photomontage artist John Heartfield did in Germany. I see these works existing in dialog with his, reaching across time while focusing squarely on the present.

I am a conceptual artist who works in a variety of
mediums ranging from oil paint to video installation. I consider my work a reflection and examination of what I observe in my physical and mental environment.
I grew up in Dallas, attended the Arts Magnet HS
for Visual Art, and continued my education at
University of Texas at Austin, receiving my Bachelor of
Fine Arts in Studio Art in 2002. I have shown my work in various spaces in Texas, some of which include Women And Their Work Gallery, the Arlington Museum of Art, Gallery Lombardi, Bolm Studios Gallery and Conduit Gallery in Dallas. I am currently working at Bolm Studios.
